Here's Hoping

The gastroenterologist called with the boy's test results this morning. She said that Kai does not have celiac but he is allergic to gluten. So hopefully if we keep him off gluten he should start to grow and have less abdominal pain. Because it's an allergy he may grow out of it-- yeah! But for now, as soon as he eats the peanut butter and jelly sandwich he took for lunch he is officially back off gluten.

Yea! That's a good thing, because you're right, it can pass. I hope it does. Life will be so much easier.

From what I understand (which may not be much) because he is allergic when it eats gluten it makes him sick to his stomach and it is also some how causing the growth issues. But if he had celiac when it ate gluten it would also be destroying the celia in his intestines and causing all sorts of other health problems. I am sure there is more to it but that is the basic run down that the GI gave me this morning.

An allergy sure sounds less serious. it doesn't make your life any easier though does it? For now anyway. I would be curious to know how the allergy is causing growth issues though. Maybe his body is too busy freaking out because of the gluten to be able to do its job and absorb the needed nutrients for growth.
