Good for you for trying anyway. Next time you will know to use the taller pot. I prefer to leave the jam making to Smuckers myself. When I made apricot jam many of them did not set and it was more like apricot desert topping. How did the jam turn out?

you could probable have written that sentence to say, There are reasons I shouldn't try to make jam (Period).

I was attempting to make strawberry jam and it boiled over. I supposes that is why the instructions said to use a tall pot.
