A Fond Farewell

Tomorrow Jack will be attending his very first adoption event so today might be our last day with him.

We are all dealing with his approaching departure in our own ways.

The boy wrote Jack a song that he plans to sing to Jack tonight.  The girl will be accompanying him with her violin.

Chase has been lovingly petting Jack and telling him how much he is going to miss him.

And Davis has been coming up with new last minute ways to torture him-- like climbing in to his cage, shutting the door, and taunting him with his ball.

We Teach Equality Young in This House

While waiting for his bus to come Chase had the following discussion with the dog

Hi Jack.  How are you?
[Chase pets him a few times]
Did you know we have the same face?
We just have different colors of skin.
Mine is . . . um
[Chase pauses to examine his hand]
. . . kind of yellow, and yours is pink.

My Budding Artist

I am very excited to announce that Davis has made significant progress in his artistic abilities in the last 24 hours.

When he started out with his little red marker he was limited to scribbling . . .

. . . in my bedroom

. . . and in the bathroom

. . . and on the dryer.

All this practice gave him the ability to draw more complicated things--like people . . .

. . . on the cupboard in the pantry.

Which, not surprisingly, captivated him enough that he tried his hand at modern art  . . .

. . . on the dog.

I'm so proud I'm practically in tears.

Doggie Depression

This is what Construction Site Lewis thinks about wearing the cone of shame.

The only cure to severe doggie depression is a good game of fetch.

Construction site is very good at fetching the ball.

He still needs to work on returning it.

You'll be happy to know that we took the cone off Sunday and he is a much happier dog. Hopefully we'll be able to remove the bandage and staples soon.

Quite the Production

I have decided that having a dog is like having a baby.  You know it's going to be a lot of work but you never really know what exactly you're getting yourself into.

Right now Construction Site Lewis is doing great.  He is finally starting to act like himself again.  But there were a few bad days last week.  I'd rather not go into a lot of detail but I will tell you a few things I learned about taking care of a dog who is recovering from surgery.

1.  Do not un-pinch a pinched drainage tube.
2.  If a pinched drainage tube becomes un-pinched quickly move the dog away from all carpeted areas.
3.  4-year-olds do not like blood.
4.  4-year-olds do not know the difference between the home phone and the cell phone.
5.  4-year-olds do not know the difference between wet wipes and cleaning rags.
6.  Really good friends let you borrow their carpet cleaner even when they know what you're cleaning with it.
7.  When all else fails large amounts of oxiclean will remove large amounts of blood from from your carpet.

More Recovery Needed

Jack does not feel well today. I never have been good at making people (or dogs) feel better when they are sick or sad.  Instead I just make them stuff.

So as Jack whimpered on his pillow this morning I got a well used people sweater and turned it into a dog sweater.  Michael said that is fine as long as the other dogs on the street don't see him in it, as they've already picked on poor Jack enough.

A Little Longer

See this pile of clean pillows, blankets, dishes and toys? It sits in the kitchen anxiously awaiting the arrival of Construction Site Lewis. Unfortunately it is going to have to wait a little bit longer.

I found out today that C.S. Lewis hasn't actually had the surgery yet. I know. Confusing. I thought she said he had, but the phone was cutting out a lot and so I must have misunderstood.

He was supposed to have the surgery on Thursday but the doctor broke his hand. They have another doctor coming in on Monday and they plan to do it then.

I'll keep you posted.

Good Bye Dear Leg

Construction Site Lewis

Today CS Lewis loses his leg (as well as a few other things). Wish him luck.

Edited to add: They just called and everything went smoothly. They are keeping him tonight and tomorrow night. If all goes well we should be able to pick him up Saturday night.

And We Shall Call You Jack

With 41% and 12 votes the dog is now named Construction Site Lewis aka "Jack." Gunner, which is also a great name came in second.

Now I have to come up with an awesome prize for winners. I'll let you know what I come up with . . . .

We Have a Muse

Having a dog in the house has inspired the boy with a whole new line of dog jokes.

Kai: Hey Madison, how do dogs drink with their noses in the water?
Madison: I don't know, how?
Kai: They don't.

And the Final Names Are . . .

I was impressed with the quality and sheer number of names you guys came up with. There were quite a few that I liked. Unfortunately, it isn't up to me so I went over the list with the kids (namely the girl and boy) and the following are their top 5:

1. Construction Site Lewis, a.k.a C.S. Lewis, a.k.a Jack (which was what people called C.S. Lewis when he was a boy)
2. Anakin Tiberius Rex
3. King
4. Gunner
5. Bob

I have put them up for vote on my poll. However, we really do have to name this dog sooner rather than later so the poll will only run until Monday night.

Oh and here are few more pictures of him to help you make your final decision.

Edited to add:

The first name is a combination of Chase, Janice, and Kacy (Janice and Kacy's additions were done in person instead of via comments)

The second name was submitted by CarrieAnne

The third was submitted by the boy and seconded by Jessieksj, shell and the vigues

The forth was submitted by pmom and seconded by the vigues

And the fifth and final name was submitted by Davis, and seconded by Shell, the vigues and Des

Adding a Little More "Fun" to Our DysFUNction

I was looking around the house the other day when I felt like we were missing something. The idea that we might be missing something is kind of weird because we have pretty much everything covered. We have a side of smart, a touch of crazy, a little bit of country, and a little bit of rock and roll. What else is there?

When I saw an ad on KSL about a boxer named Helmet that needed a foster home I was intrigued, but not sold. However, when I found out that Helmet was actually HellMutt and he was due to have one of his back legs removed I realized this was it. What this family needs is a 3 legged boxer named HellMutt.

It turns out HellMutt is a real sweet heart, but what else would you expect from a dog with that name. Fortunately we got permission to change his name. In fact, the woman from the rescue was thrilled that we wanted to change his name. So here are the current suggestions:

Madison thinks we should name him either Jack or Jake
Kai wants to name him King (after the Neil Young song)
Chase wants to name him Construction Site
Davis wants to name him Bob.

What do you think we should name him? Here's the deal, make suggestions and we will pick our favorite 5 and create a poll. I may even give the winner a prize. An awesome prize-- like a small ball of my poorly spun yarn.
